Project Description
The Sunset Boulevard (S-186) and Miller Drive West (S-187) project is a proposed streetscape improvement. The existing roads will be improved to a 2-lane curb & gutter roadway with a closed drainage system (catch-basins and pipes). New pedestrian and bicycle facilities will be included with a 5-ft sidewalk on the north side of the roads and a 8-ft/10-ft shared-use path on the south side which will connect to the sidewalks and bikes lanes on US 21 Business (Sea Island Parkway) and sidewalks on SC 802 (Sam’s Point Road). Other improvements involve:
- Providing a dedicated right turn lane on Miller Drive West at Sam’s Point Road
- Constructing a single-lane roundabout at Sunset Boulevard and Miller Drive West intersection to provide traffic calming and safety benefits
- Incorporating streetlighting to improve nighttime safety for bicyclists and pedestrians
The improvements will remain within the existing right of way but new right of way will be required. The new right of way is shown on the exhibits.
The following exhibits show the proposed design of Sunset Blvd/Miller Dr W road improvements
Right of Way Acquisition: Second Quarter 2025
Begin Construction: Fourth Quarter 2026

Project Description
The Hazel Farm Road and Gay Drive (S-497) project is a proposed streetscape improvement and will include improvements along Inlet Road (S-498) for connection to the commercial properties for residents. The existing roads will be improved to a 2-lane curb & gutter roadway with a closed drainage system (catch-basins and pipes). New pedestrian and bicycle facilities will be included with a 5-ft sidewalk on the north side and a 10-ft shared-use path on the south side which will connect to the sidewalks and bike lanes on US 21 (Lady’s Island Drive) and US 21 (Sea Island Parkway) as well as the planned improvements for the “Future Lady’s Island Middle School Access Road”. Other improvements involve:
- Realigning Hazel Farm Road at Lady’s Island Drive to meet current standards for the intersection angle
- Constructing a single-lane roundabout at Hazel Farm Road, Inlet Road, and Gay Drive to improve intersection operations by creating one intersection versus two separate intersections and provide traffic calming and safety benefits
- Incorporating streetlighting to improve nighttime safety for bicyclists and pedestrians
- Providing a dedicated left turn lane on Hazel Farm Road at Lady’s Island Drive and on Gay Drive at Sea Island Parkway
The project is also proposing a change to the intersection operations at Lupo Drive by converting Lupo Drive to stop-controlled and Gay Drive as the through movement. Currently, Gay Drive is stop-controlled and Lupo Drive is the through movement.
The improvements will remain within the existing right of way but new right of way will be required. The new right of way is shown on the exhibits.
